Google Gemini models explained

This post first covered Gemini 2.0 Flash, which Google launched in December 2024. Gemini has moved through several generations since then. Here is where Google’s AI models stand today, which one to use and what each plan costs.

Gemini 4 Argon

Google’s newest flagship, announced September 30, 2026. Google says it is built for long, multi-step work in software engineering, finance, law and cybersecurity, and that it beat OpenAI’s and Anthropic’s top models on several benchmarks. For now it is limited to security partners in Google’s Fairwind Program. Google says paying subscribers will be first in line when access expands. Read our full Gemini 4 Argon review.

Gemini 3.8 Flash

The best widely available Gemini model today. Google calls it its best Flash model for reasoning and coding, and it runs in the Gemini app for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, AI Mode in Search and Gemini in Google Sheets. It handles a 1 million token context, enough for a long book or a large codebase.

  • API price: $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output tokens, an introductory rate Google says runs until December 31, 2026

Gemini 3.1 Pro

Still the top Pro model open to the public. It is slower and pricier than Flash, but stronger on difficult reasoning. Google announced Gemini 3.5 Pro in May 2026 for a June release, but it never shipped, and Google has since shifted its focus to Gemini 4.

  • API price: $2 per million input tokens and $12 per million output tokens

Gemini as an AI agent

Google now pitches Gemini as much for doing work as for answering questions:

  • Gemini Spark: an agent in the Gemini app that carries out multi-step tasks for you, available on Ultra in the US.
  • Jules: a coding agent that works through tasks in your GitHub repositories.
  • Antigravity: Google’s agent-first platform for building software, where Gemini 4 is also being tested.

Which Gemini should you use?

  • Most people: Google AI Pro, which gives you Gemini 3.8 Flash and Gemini 3.1 Pro. The free app uses a slightly older Flash model.
  • Hard reasoning or long documents: Gemini 3.1 Pro, on AI Pro or higher.
  • Developers on a budget: Gemini 3.8 Flash in the API, while the introductory price lasts.
  • Video: Gemini Omni, included in paid plans and free in YouTube Shorts.
