Most AI coding agents are sold as a monthly plan with a usage allowance. Claude Code starts at $20/mo (Claude Pro) and GitHub Copilot coding agent starts at $10/mo (Copilot Pro). The limits work in different ways. Claude Pro usage resets per 5-hour session, while each Copilot task uses monthly AI credits plus GitHub Actions minutes.
Four agents on this page have a free tier: Cursor (Free; Pro $20/mo), OpenAI Codex (Free; Go $8/mo), Replit Agent (Free; Core $20/mo) and Lovable (Free; Pro $25/mo). The app builders bill by credits. Lovable's examples run from 0.5 to 1.7 credits per prompt and Replit's Power and Max modes are billed by effort on top of the plan.
Heavy use costs more than the entry price suggests. Claude Max is $100 or $200 a month, Codex Pro is $100, $200 or $500/mo and Cursor says daily agent users typically spend $60 to $100 a month in total. Claude Code and Codex can also be paid per token with an API key. For teams, standard seats run from $19/user/mo on Copilot Business to $40/user/mo on Cursor Teams.
We note whether the agent works in your terminal, an editor, the browser or the cloud, since that shapes your daily workflow.
We check if it can create branches, commit and open pull requests on its own or if you move changes by hand.
We look past the plan price to session caps, credit pools and reset windows, such as Claude Pro's 5-hour sessions.
We check what a free tier really includes, because some agents keep their cloud agent off the free plan.
We record which models it runs and whether it supports MCP servers, skills or hooks.
Every fact comes from the vendor’s official site. How we review
An AI coding agent takes a task and writes, runs and ships the code for you. Claude Code reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands and opens pull requests. GitHub Copilot coding agent takes an assigned issue, works in a GitHub Actions environment and opens a pull request for review. Replit Agent and Lovable go further and build whole apps from a chat prompt.
Yes, with limits. Cursor's Hobby plan is free with limited Agent requests, OpenAI Codex Free covers quick coding tasks in the desktop app, Replit Starter gives daily Agent credits and Lovable Free gives 5 credits a day up to 30 a month. The Codex CLI is open source and comes with the Go plan at $8/mo. Claude Code and the Copilot coding agent are not on free plans. Codex vs Claude Code →
It depends on where you work. For large codebases and git work from the terminal, Claude Code is a strong pick from $20/mo. Cursor is the most polished choice inside a full code editor, with a free Hobby plan and Pro at $20/mo. Teams on GitHub get the cheapest paid entry with Copilot coding agent at $10/mo. Cursor vs Claude Code →
Code completion suggests code as you type and you make every edit yourself. An AI coding agent takes a whole task, edits across files, runs commands and can open a pull request. The cost is different too. Cursor's docs say daily Tab users usually stay within included usage, while daily agent users typically spend $60 to $100 a month in total.
