Short answer: ChatGPT agent mode no longer exists. OpenAI replaced it with ChatGPT Work in July 2026. To book an appointment now, pick Work from the model menu on a paid plan, tell it the service, website, time window and your limits, approve the site, sign in when asked and confirm the booking before it submits. For restaurant tables, use regular ChatGPT instead, which books through OpenTable, Resy and Yelp on every plan.

OpenAI’s help page now says ChatGPT agent is no longer available and points to ChatGPT Work and the cloud browser. The old tricks, like typing /agent in the chat box, don’t work anymore. OpenAI also shut down its Atlas browser on August 9, 2026 and moved those features into ChatGPT.
The good news: Work does everything agent mode did for bookings, and it handles logins more safely.
| Old (2025) | Now (October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Agent mode, turned on with /agent | ChatGPT Work, picked from the model menu |
| Virtual computer | Cloud browser, chosen by ChatGPT when needed |
| Takeover mode for logins | Secure sign-in form; ChatGPT can’t see your password |
| Monthly task limit | Shared allowance with Codex, reset every 5 hours and weekly |
| Atlas browser agent | Shut down; use the ChatGPT desktop app or cloud browser |
What you need before you start
- A paid plan. Work is on Plus ($20/mo), Pro, Business and Enterprise. It is not on Free or Go.
- Your calendar connected (optional but useful). The Google Calendar and Outlook Calendar plugins let ChatGPT check when you’re free. The Calendly plugin can book or cancel meetings directly.
- Your login for the booking site, plus your phone for any 2FA code.
- Your details ready: service, location, dates, times and anything that rules a slot out.
How to book an appointment with ChatGPT Work: step by step
- Connect your calendar. Open Plugins in the ChatGPT sidebar, find Google Calendar, Outlook Calendar or Calendly and choose Install plugin. Sign in and allow access.
- Switch to Work. On the web or phone, pick Work from the dropdown at the top of the chat. In the desktop app, open the ChatGPT menu and toggle to Work.
- Describe the booking in one message. Name the outcome, the website, the time window and your limits. End with “ask me before you book.” See the prompts below.
- Approve the website. ChatGPT asks before it opens a new site in its cloud browser. You can change the default in Settings > Cloud browser to Always ask, Auto approve or Always allow.
- Sign in when asked. ChatGPT shows the site’s login screen and you type your details into a secure form. It can’t see or store your username or password. Enter a 2FA code if the site sends one.
- Review the options. ChatGPT lists the open slots it found and checks them against your calendar. Pick one.
- Confirm the booking. Work stops before anything that creates a real commitment, like submitting a booking or paying a deposit. Read the summary and say yes.
- Check the confirmation. Look for the confirmation email, make sure the event is on your calendar and sign out of the site in the cloud browser if you don’t want to stay logged in.
If anything gets stuck, ask ChatGPT to hand you the browser. It gives you a link so you can click through the tricky part yourself, then hand it back.
Copy-and-paste prompts that work
Doctor or dentist: “Using [clinic website], find a cleaning appointment at the [location] office in the next two weeks. I can only do weekday mornings before 11am and nothing that clashes with my Google Calendar. Show me the three earliest options and ask me before you book.”
Haircut or salon: “Book a men’s haircut with [stylist] at [salon] on their booking page for this Saturday between 10am and 2pm. If Saturday is full, check Sunday. Don’t pay a deposit without asking me.”
Government office: “Find the earliest DMV appointment for a license renewal within 15 miles of [ZIP]. List the options with dates and addresses. Don’t book yet.”
Business meeting: “@Calendly create a 30-minute meeting link for next week and send me the link. Only offer Tuesday to Thursday afternoons.”
Restaurant (use regular chat, not Work): “Find a table for 4 at an Italian place in downtown Austin this Friday around 7:30pm, under $60 a person, with vegetarian options.”
Which ChatGPT feature to use for each booking
| Booking type | Best ChatGPT feature | Plan needed |
|---|---|---|
| Restaurant table | Regular chat (OpenTable, Resy, Yelp) | Any, including Free |
| Meeting with a client | Calendly plugin | Check the plugin page |
| Doctor, dentist, salon, gym class | ChatGPT Work with cloud browser | Plus or higher |
| DMV or government slot | ChatGPT Work with cloud browser | Plus or higher |
| Flight or hotel | Expedia app in ChatGPT (books on Expedia’s site) | Any |
| Recurring check for openings | Scheduled task | Any (Free gets 3 active tasks) |
Limits and safety tips
- Some sites block it. Sites with strong bot protection or CAPTCHAs may stop the cloud browser. Book those yourself.
- It can’t make phone calls. If the business only books by phone, use an AI receptionist on your end or call them yourself.
- Never paste passwords or card numbers into the chat. Use the secure sign-in form, and enter payment details yourself if a site asks for them.
- Check the result. OpenAI says to verify results before you rely on them. Always look for the confirmation email.
- Watch your allowance. On Plus, Work shares a limit with Codex of roughly 5 to 45 messages every 5 hours, depending on the task. Pro gets more.
