What is Gemini Deep Research?

Gemini Deep Research is an agentic feature in Google’s Gemini app. Google says it turns your prompt into a multi-point research plan that you can review and refine, then searches and browses the web, reasons over what it finds and writes a detailed report. It runs in the background and notifies you when it finishes.

Its edge is Google’s own data. If you opt in, it can also read your Gmail, Drive and Chat. You can add uploaded files or NotebookLM notebooks too. Google Search is on by default and you can switch it off. Once the report is ready you can export it to Google Docs, share it, copy the text or turn it into an Audio Overview in Canvas. Our Gemini Deep Research review covers the plans in more detail.

What is ChatGPT Deep Research?

ChatGPT Deep Research is the research mode inside ChatGPT. It browses many sources over several minutes and returns a long report with citations. Per our ChatGPT Deep Research page, it works on every ChatGPT plan, including Free. Sources can be the public web, files you upload, connected apps and specific websites you choose.

The report can be exported as Markdown, Word or PDF, which is the main practical difference from Gemini. If your next step is to send the file to a client or paste it into a document, that saves a step. Our ChatGPT Deep Research review lists every plan.

Gemini vs ChatGPT Deep Research pricing

Both start free. After that the entry price is low and the top tiers are expensive. The part that matters most is what each plan lets you do in a month, and that is exactly what neither company spells out.

Gemini pricing

PlanPriceWhat changes for Deep Research
Free$0Deep Research is included
Google AI Plus$4.99 a month2x the usage of Free
Google AI Pro$19.99 a month4x the usage of Free, and the Pro model for reports

Google says its limits depend on prompt complexity and features used, and that they refresh every 5 hours until you reach a weekly limit. It does not give a per-plan count of Deep Research reports.

OpenAI does not publish a task count either. It labels allowances as limited, expanded or maximum. An in-product counter shows what you have left. Its own pricing pages did not load for us when we wrote this, so these prices come from the Klyvoo page built from OpenAI’s pricing, checked on October 3, 2026. Which costs less?

Gemini is cheaper at every entry point. Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month against $8 for ChatGPT Go, and AI Pro is $19.99 against $20 for Plus. At the top the two are close: from $99.99 a month for Google AI Ultra and $100 for the first ChatGPT Pro tier. Because neither lists a report count, the price does not tell you how many reports you get. Test the free plan on a real question first.

Where Gemini Deep Research wins

  • Google data. It can read Gmail, Drive and Chat when you allow it.
  • Editable plan. You review and change the research plan before it starts.
  • Lower entry price. Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month.
  • Audio Overview. A finished report can become a spoken summary in Canvas.
  • Google Docs export. The report goes straight into a doc you can keep editing.
  • Language reach. Google lists 150 countries and more than 45 languages.

Where ChatGPT Deep Research wins

  • Export formats. Markdown, Word and PDF, with citations in every report.
  • Connected apps. It can pull from apps such as Google Drive and SharePoint where they are enabled.
  • Choose your sites. You can point it at specific websites.
  • Business plans. Business and Enterprise include it, with team billing.
  • A familiar chat. Follow-up questions happen in the same ChatGPT thread you already use.

What neither does

Neither guarantees a correct report. They can misread a source, miss a page or state a guess with confidence, so open the links behind any number you plan to quote. Both take minutes rather than seconds, so they are poor for quick lookups. They also work from what is on the web, so a topic with thin or paywalled coverage gives thin reports. Treat the output as a well-organized first draft of your research, then check the claims that carry weight. Neither publishes how many reports a plan allows. If you need fast answers with sources attached, Perplexity is built for that, and our Perplexity vs Claude post shows how it compares with a general assistant. Which should you choose?

  • You work in Google Workspace: Gemini, because it reads Gmail and Drive.
  • You need a Word or PDF file to send on: ChatGPT.
  • You want the cheapest paid plan: Gemini, at $4.99 a month.
  • You want to see and edit the plan first: Gemini.
  • Your team already pays for ChatGPT Business: use what is included.
  • You are not sure: run the same question on both free plans and compare the reports. Pick a question you already know the answer to, so you can judge the sourcing and the gaps.
  • You need charts and visuals in the report: Gemini on Google AI Ultra, which Google says can add charts, diagrams and interactive simulators.
