What is Perplexity?

Perplexity is built around one habit: every answer comes with its sources. You ask a question, it searches the web and writes a short answer with numbered citations you can click. A Research mode goes further. Our review notes it runs many searches and reads many sources before it writes a report, and it typically takes a few minutes.

Because the sources sit next to the answer, it suits quick fact checks and early research, when you need to know where a claim came from. On paid plans Perplexity also lets you pick between models from several providers, which Claude does not. Our full Perplexity review covers its plans and Research limits.

What is Claude?

Claude is Anthropic’s assistant. Anthropic says it can search the web for current information, do research, remember context from past conversations, connect to apps you already use and create files. It is closer to a colleague you work through a task with than to a search box.

Where Perplexity hands you an answer, Claude is better at what comes after: turning ten pages of notes into a memo, checking a contract draft, cleaning a spreadsheet or writing and fixing code. Paid plans add Claude Code, a coding agent covered on our Claude Code page, and the larger models.

Perplexity vs Claude pricing

Both start free, and both put the better models and bigger limits behind a monthly plan.

Perplexity pricing

PlanPriceWhat you get
Free$0Practically unlimited basic searches, very limited Pro Searches
Education Pro$10 a monthVerified students and educators, everything in Pro
Pro$20 a monthExtended Pro Search, advanced models, 10x as many citations per answer, file and app creation
Max$200 a month, or $2,000 billed yearlyHighest access to advanced models, early access to new products, priority support
Enterprise ProFrom $40 a month or $400 a year per seatPro features plus admin controls and a no-training data policy

Perplexity does not publish exact Research limits for Pro or Max, so the price tells you less than it does on other tools. Its own help pages we could fetch list the Pro and Max features but not their prices, so the Pro and Max prices above come from the Klyvoo page built from Perplexity’s pricing. Check the price on perplexity.ai before you pay.

Claude pricing

PlanPriceWhat you get
Free$0Chat, web search, file creation, memory, connectors, up to 5 projects, Sonnet and Haiku
Pro$20 a month billed monthly, $17 a month billed yearlyMore usage, Claude Code, unlimited projects, more models including Opus
MaxFrom $100 a month, billed monthly5x or 20x Pro usage, priority access at busy times
Team Standard$25 per seat a month billed monthly, $20 billed yearlyMore usage than Pro, for 2 to 150 seats
Team Premium$125 per seat a month billed monthly, $100 billed yearly5x the usage of a Standard seat

Anthropic says Pro gives at least 5x more usage per five-hour session than Free, and paid plans also have weekly limits. Usage resets on a rolling five-hour window, so heavy sessions can hit a wall mid-afternoon.

Which costs less?

At the entry level they match: $20 a month each. Claude drops to $17 a month if you pay for the year. At the top the gap is wide. Claude Max starts at $100 a month while Perplexity Max is $200 a month. The free plans are more different than they look. Perplexity’s free tier is generous for search but very limited for its deeper features. Claude’s free tier gives you chat, files and memory but only the smaller models.

Where Perplexity wins

  • Sources on every answer. You can see where each claim came from and click through.
  • Speed for lookups. It is built to answer a question in seconds, not to hold a long conversation.
  • Several model providers. Paid plans let you try models from different companies in one place.
  • Research mode. It reads many sources and writes a cited report for you.
  • A student price. Education Pro is $10 a month for verified students and educators.

Where Claude wins

  • Long, careful work. Writing, editing and analysis over many pages is what it is for.
  • Files. It produces editable Word, Excel and PowerPoint files and charts.
  • Memory and projects. Context carries over between chats, and unlimited projects come with Pro.
  • Connectors. It plugs into apps such as Slack, Gmail and Google Calendar.
  • Coding. Pro includes Claude Code, so one subscription covers chat and a coding agent.
  • Cheaper top tier. Max starts at $100 a month.

What neither does

Neither replaces checking the source. A cited answer can still be wrong, and a confident draft can still hold an invented detail. Open the links for anything that matters, such as a number you will quote or a legal point. Neither publishes a fixed number of tasks per plan, so you cannot work out in advance how far a month will stretch. Perplexity is weaker at long document work. Claude is not a search engine first, so for a quick lookup with sources it takes a few more steps.

Which should you choose?

  • You mostly look things up and need sources: Perplexity.
  • You write, edit or analyze documents all day: Claude.
  • You code, or want to start: Claude, because Pro includes Claude Code.
  • You are a student: try Perplexity Education Pro at $10 a month, and Claude Free.
  • You do market or competitor research and then write it up: use Perplexity to gather sources and Claude to turn them into a report.
  • You want one subscription only: start with the free plan of each and keep the one you open more.
